Going out on a limb!

This year's big Christmas surprise was our family's first pets: two zebra finches! The female, "Snowflake," belongs to Hanna (our aspiring vet), and the male, "Comet," is shared by the other kids. They reside in the Taj Mahal (yeah, we know how to treat our pets), and spend their time quietly peeping and hopping around.

So... we will see how it goes, this pet care deal. Not only are they the kids' first pets, but I have also never had a pet of any kind. I'm definitely a novice here. We have been told that finches are a pretty easy pet, as long as you don't scare them and give them heart failure. Really.

How cute! Tell Hanna I always wanted to be a vet too! Snowflake is the prettiest bird. (they both are super cool though) It was nice to see you all for the short visit.

Cool! JayC keeps wanting a bird, but I keep telling him no. (Yeah, he's like a little kid, huh?!) I tell him as soon as he gets rid of Baxter then he can have a different pet. One at a time... Birds are nice cuz they stay in their cage and make pretty sounds. Hopefully someday soon we can have a longer visit. I hope everyone is well! Connell and I both got the flu bug going around, but are at the tail end of it.

Christmas Concert

Z ac and Sara participated in their school's Christmas concert last week. Zac is in the 4th grade and wasn't very excited to be in the chorus of the play (he wanted to be in the audience) but he was a good sport. He wore the santa hat, sang, and even played the kazoo when the time came! S ara was beyond excited for the program! She participated with the 3rd grade in a song and light stick show and did well, but her favorite part was singing with the honor choir SunShine Singers. They meet once a week after school, and Sara loves every minute of it! W arning: I took this video with my old digital camera, while holding Joziah on my lap (who occasionally fought me for the camera), and the quality is terrible. Sweet and Sour Chicken

Another sister-in-law challenge here, to post a favorite family recipe. I don't make this one all the time, but it is a true favorite of everyone here and my mom got rave reviews this Christmas when she took it to a dinner at the Boise ID Temple, where my dad works. We make it for special occasions. Sweet & Sour Chicken The following sauce will cover enough chicken to fill a 9 x 13" baking dish. You may choose whichever chicken type your family enjoys. Growing up, we used bone-in chicken pieces, but these days I like to take boneless skinless chicken breasts and cut them into strips. Sprinkle pieces of chicken with salt and pepper. Roll pieces in corn startch and then into beaten egg. Fry till golden brown, using high heat. (my Mom fries in oil, I just spray the fry pan) Put pieces of chicken into baking dish. Sauce: 3/4 cup sugar, half brown and half white 1/4 cup water or chicken stock 1/2 cup vinegar 1 Tablespoon soy sauce 1/4 cup ketchup dash of salt Heat until sugar i...
